The Chelmsford Club was founded in 1917-18.
Chelmsford Club was raised on 27th July, 1928 on a Lease Deed signed between the Secretary of State for India and Chelmsford Club Limited. This Lease Deed was signed by Mr. P. Mukherjee, the then Joint Honorary Secretary, Chelmsford Club Ltd and Mr. JNE Johnson. C.I.E, I.C.S., Chief Commissioner of Delhi by the order and directions of the Governor General of India in Council outing in the premises for and on behalf of the Secretary of State of India. The Club earlier used to shuttle between Delhi and Shimla along with the work of Govt. of India. From the time of its joining to-date the Club has moved from strength to strength. The Club was raised with the purpose of affording its Members all the usual facilities.
The Club has the rich history that boasts of having hosted the First Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the First Commander-in-Chief Field Marshall K.M. Cariappa, the Club has felicitated the victorious Indian Hockey Team that won the Olympic Gold, Michael Ferreira,Wilson Jones, have played Billiards in this Club. Manchandas and Vikas Kapur, National Squash champion Played Squash in Chelmsford Club Courts. Artists like Lata Mangeshkar,Gulam Ali,Jagjit Singh,Mahender Kapur, Mohammad Rafi, have performed here.Foreign visiting Cricket Teams from 1950 to 1970 have been felicitated here. The Club enjoys a premier location at Lutyen’s Delhi at 1,Raisina Road,New Delhi and remains one of the oldest Clubs in the Capital.
The Membership of the Club is an amalgamation of Bureaucrats,Industrialists Businessmen and Entrepreneurs.
