Established in 1885 it is the prime social club in Coonoor with over 900 members and 70 affiliate member clubs.
Our motto is “There are no strangers. Just friends you have not met”.
The Club, as per the Nilgiris Gazateer, was started in the later part of the 19th century by General Richard Hamilton and so he was probably the founder. The beginning was small with basically a couple of tennis courts.
Around then Mr. Gray, owner of Gray’s Hotel, built a small room which is still part of one of the cottages. Later a Tennis Club was established on this spot and in 1984 the adjoining house “Bleak Heath” was rented. This perhaps was the nucleus of the present club.
Since then the club has come a long way in membership and facilities.
